How to clean window tracks and sills, dry first, then wet
To clean window tracks, open the window and vacuum the loose dirt out with a crevice tool while it's dry. Then spray the track with warm soapy water or diluted vinegar, wait five minutes, scrub the corners with a narrow brush, wipe the sludge out with a cloth, and dry the track and the sill. Plan on five to ten minutes a window.
What do you need?
- A vacuum with a crevice tool and a small brush attachment
- A narrow, stiff window track brush, or an old toothbrush
- A spray bottle with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, or equal parts white vinegar and water
- Microfiber cloths, plus a few paper towels for the worst of the sludge
- A butter knife or a flat plastic scraper wrapped in a thin cloth, for the corners
- Cotton swabs for the drain holes
How do you clean window tracks step by step?
- Open the window all the way so you can reach the whole track. On a double-hung window, lower the top sash too.
- Vacuum dry. Run the crevice tool along the track and into each corner. Dead bugs, sand and pollen come out now. If you wet them first, you're scrubbing mud.
- Spray and wait. Mist the track and give it five minutes to soften the stuck-on grime.
- Scrub. Run the track brush along the channel and work it hard into the corners, where dirt packs in.
- Wipe it out. Push a cloth along the track with your finger or the wrapped knife. Rinse the cloth and go again until it comes out clean.
- Clear the weep holes. Look for small drain slots along the outside edge of the track. A cotton swab or a pipe cleaner opens them up so rain drains out instead of pooling.
- Dry everything. A wet track collects dust fast and feeds mildew.
Why does a window track brush help?
Tracks are narrow and the dirt sits in the corners, which a sponge and a regular cloth can't reach. A track brush has stiff bristles on a thin head, sometimes with a flat scraper end, so it gets down into the channel. It is inexpensive. If you don't want one more tool, a toothbrush and a cloth-wrapped butter knife cover a lot of what it does.
How do you clean a window sill?
Wipe it with a damp microfiber cloth and the same soapy spray, then dry it. For scuffs on a painted sill, a damp melamine sponge used lightly takes them off. Press gently, because it can dull a glossy paint finish.
Wood sills with bare or flaking spots need a dry cloth only until they're repainted. Water soaks into raw wood and swells it.
How do you handle mold in a window track?
Black spots in the corners of a track are common on windows that sweat in winter. Spray with straight white vinegar, leave it 10 minutes, scrub and wipe, then dry. Wear gloves.
If it comes back within a few weeks, the cause is moisture: condensation on cold glass, a blocked weep hole, or a leak around the frame. Cleaning won't fix that. A dehumidifier and running bathroom and kitchen fans helps with condensation. A leak needs a window repair.
How do you clean sliding glass door tracks?
The same way, with more vacuuming. Door tracks catch everything that comes in on shoes, so vacuum them weekly in summer. After cleaning, a dry silicone spray on the rail keeps the door gliding. Skip oil or grease, which holds dirt.
How often should window tracks be cleaned?
Every month or two for the windows you open, and twice a year for the ones you don't. Do those two in spring, after pollen season starts, and fall, before the windows close for winter.
While you're at it, the screens and glass are next. See how to clean window screens and how to clean inside windows.
What does a house cleaning cover at the windows?
Window sills and ledges are wiped on a Standard House Cleaning, RoutineCare, and on a Deep Cleaning, PureRenewal. On Deep Cleaning, blinds are dusted too.
Inside window glass and wet-wiped blinds are add-ons you pick when you book. The window glass add-on is interior glass only, screens aren't included, and no ladders are used.

FAQ
What is the easiest way to clean window tracks? Vacuum them dry with a crevice tool first, then spray, wait five minutes, scrub with a narrow brush and wipe out the loosened dirt. Doing it dry first is what keeps it from turning into mud.
Do I need a special window track brush? It helps. A narrow, stiff brush made for tracks reaches the corners better than a toothbrush, but an old toothbrush and a butter knife wrapped in a cloth will do the job.
What gets black mold out of a window track? Surface spots usually come off with a spray of white vinegar left for 10 minutes, then a scrub and a wipe. Mold that keeps coming back points to condensation or a leak, which cleaning won't fix.
Are window sills part of a house cleaning? Yes. Window sills and ledges are wiped on Standard House Cleaning and Deep Cleaning. Interior window glass is an add-on, interior only, with screens not included and no ladders used.
