How to organize school supplies at home

September 04, 2024•4 min read

To organize school supplies at home, split them into two places: a small homework caddy with only what kids use every night, and one backstock bin for everything else. Give each child one color, one hook and one paper tray, and reset it all every Sunday. Systems break down when the caddy tries to hold everything.

Why do school supplies take over the house?

Because they arrive all at once. The August haul from the supply list lands on the kitchen counter, half of it goes to school, and the other half gets spread across three drawers. By October there are pens in every drawer in the house and none of them where the homework is.

The fix isn't more containers. It's deciding what lives where.

How do you set up a homework station?

Put it where homework actually happens. For many families that's the kitchen table or the island, not the desk in the bedroom nobody sits at.

Use a portable caddy with a handle, so the table can be cleared for dinner in one move. Stock it with:

  • Sharpened pencils and a sharpener with a lid
  • A couple of erasers
  • A glue stick and scissors
  • A ruler
  • Crayons or markers, depending on age
  • Highlighters and sticky notes
  • A calculator, for older kids

That's it. If it's used less than once a week, it doesn't go in the caddy.

Pencils point up in a cup, markers stand cap down so they don't dry out, and crayons go in a jar instead of the box they came in. The box is gone by Halloween anyway.

Where does the extra stuff go?

One clear bin, on a closet shelf or in the basement, with the backstock sorted inside by type: the extra glue sticks, the spare notebooks, the packs of pencils. When the caddy runs out, you shop the bin before you shop the store.

Take stock in January. The mid-year supply requests from teachers come then, and you'll often already have them.

How do you keep backpacks and papers under control?

Set up a landing spot by the door you actually use, which is often the garage door, not the front door.

  • One hook per child at their height, for the backpack.
  • One tray or folder per child for papers that come home.
  • A "needs a parent" folder for permission slips and forms to sign. Signed papers go straight back in the backpack.

Every Sunday, empty the paper trays. Keep what's due, what needs signing, and a few pieces of art worth framing. Photograph the rest and recycle it.

Does color-coding help with siblings?

Yes. Give each child one color for their folders, their bin label, their hook and their water bottle. When a folder turns up on the stairs, everyone knows whose it is without asking.

How do you keep the supplies themselves clean?

  • Lunchboxes: empty and wipe them out every night, and leave them open to dry.
  • Water bottles: take the lid and straw apart to wash. That's where the smell comes from.
  • Backpacks: empty them fully once a month and shake out the crumbs. Many fabric backpacks can be hand washed and air dried. Check the label first.
  • The caddy: dump it out and wipe it on Sunday. Pencil shavings and broken crayon bits collect in the bottom.

What does a Sunday reset look like?

Ten minutes, the whole family:

  1. Empty the backpacks onto the table.
  2. Sort papers: sign, return, keep, recycle.
  3. Refill the caddy from the backstock bin.
  4. Wipe the caddy, the lunchboxes and the table.
  5. Backpacks back on their hooks, packed for Monday.

Can a cleaning service help during the school year?

Not with this part. Organizing and decluttering aren't on any of our cleaning checklists, so the supply system is yours to run.

What a cleaning does is everything around it. Recurring House Cleaning, RoutineCare Plans, puts a standard house cleaning on a schedule, so the floors, kitchen and bathrooms are handled.

Standard house cleaning can be booked weekly, every other week or every 4 weeks.

Do the Sunday reset before your cleaning day. Surfaces that are clear of clutter get wiped, and a cleared kitchen table is one of them.

FAQ

Where should school supplies be kept at home? Where homework actually happens, which for many families is the kitchen table. Keep a portable caddy there with the nightly basics, and store the extras in one backstock bin in a closet.

What goes in a homework caddy? Sharpened pencils, a sharpener, erasers, a glue stick, scissors, a ruler, crayons or markers, highlighters and sticky notes. Older kids add a calculator. Anything used less than weekly goes in backstock.

How do you stop school papers from piling up? Give each child one tray or folder for papers that come home, empty it every Sunday, and keep only what needs signing, what's due, and a few pieces of art worth framing. Photograph the rest.

Will a house cleaner organize the homework area? No. Organizing and decluttering aren't on any of our cleaning checklists. Reset the station before the visit, and the clear surfaces get wiped.
