How to clean a shower head and get the pressure back
To clean a shower head, fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, tie it around the head so the nozzles sit in the vinegar, and leave it 30 to 60 minutes. Take the bag off, rub each nozzle with your thumb or an old toothbrush, run hot water through it for a minute, and buff the finish dry.
That handles the usual problem: white mineral scale plugging the small holes, which makes the spray weak, uneven or shoot off sideways.
What do you need?
- White vinegar
- A plastic bag big enough to fit over the head
- A rubber band or twist tie
- An old soft toothbrush
- A toothpick or a safety pin
- A microfiber cloth
- For removal: an adjustable wrench, a rag to wrap the nut, and plumber's tape
How do you clean a shower head without removing it?
- Check the finish first. Vinegar is fine on chrome for a short soak. On brass, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black or gold-tone finishes, it can dull or discolor the surface. For those, use warm soapy water and a soft brush, and check the manufacturer's care guide.
- Fill the bag. Pour in enough vinegar to cover the nozzle face when the bag is lifted up around the head.
- Tie it on. Slip the bag over the head and secure it around the arm with the rubber band or twist tie.
- Wait 30 to 60 minutes. Heavy scale may need a second round. Don't leave a soak running overnight on anything you aren't sure is chrome.
- Rub the nozzles. Many shower heads have soft rubber nozzles. Rub them with your thumb and the scale breaks out. On hard nozzles, use the toothbrush.
- Flush it. Run the hot water for a minute to push out the loosened scale.
- Dry and buff. Wipe the head and arm with a dry microfiber cloth so new water spots don't form right away.
Hands-on time is about 10 minutes. The rest is waiting.
How do you deep clean a shower head that's badly clogged?
If the soak doesn't bring the spray back, take the head off.
- Unscrew it. Wrap the nut with a rag so the wrench doesn't scratch the finish, and turn it counterclockwise. Many heads come off by hand.
- Check the screen. Look inside the connection end. There's often a small mesh screen or flow restrictor that catches sediment. Rinse it under the tap and brush it clean.
- Soak the head. Submerge it in a bowl of vinegar for up to an hour if it's chrome.
- Clear the holes. Use the toothpick or pin to push out any scale still stuck in a nozzle. Go gently so you don't widen the holes.
- Rinse it backward. Hold it upside down under the faucet so water runs through it in reverse and carries out the loose bits.
- Reinstall it. Wrap two or three turns of fresh plumber's tape clockwise around the threads on the shower arm, then screw the head back on. Hand tight plus a small turn with the wrapped wrench is enough. Run the water and check for drips at the joint.
What should you avoid?
- Bleach. It doesn't dissolve mineral scale, and it can damage finishes and rubber parts.
- Hard brushes and scouring pads on chrome or plated finishes. They leave fine scratches.
- Long vinegar soaks on specialty finishes. Short and rinsed, or not at all.
- Overtightening when you reinstall. It can crack the head or strip the threads.
Run the exhaust fan or open a window while you work. Vinegar smell fades fast with air moving.
How often should you clean a shower head?
Rub the nozzles and wipe the face every week or two when you clean the shower. Do the full vinegar soak every month or two, or as soon as you see white crust or the spray pattern changes. Homes with hard water need it more often.
While you're there, the rest of the shower may be due too. See how to clean a shower properly and how to clean chrome bathroom fixtures.

FAQ
How long should a shower head soak in vinegar? On chrome, 30 to 60 minutes is usually enough for light buildup, and you can repeat it for heavy scale. On brass, nickel, bronze, matte black or gold-tone finishes, keep it short or skip vinegar and check the manufacturer's care guide.
Can I clean a shower head without removing it? Yes. Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, slip it over the head so the nozzles are submerged, and hold it in place with a rubber band or twist tie. Remove it after the soak and run hot water through the head.
Why is my shower head still weak after cleaning? Check the small screen or flow restrictor where the head screws onto the arm. Sediment collects there, and rinsing it clears many pressure problems. If the house has low pressure everywhere, the issue is in the plumbing, not the shower head.
How often should you clean a shower head? A quick nozzle rub and wipe every week or two keeps scale from settling in. Do a full vinegar soak every month or two, or sooner if you see white crust or the spray goes sideways.
Does a house cleaning include bathroom fixtures? Standard House Cleaning cleans the bathroom fixtures and drains, and Deep Cleaning descales and polishes them.
