How to clean chrome bathroom fixtures and get the shine back

March 26, 2024•4 min read

To clean chrome bathroom fixtures, wipe them with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, scrub around the base and handles with a soft toothbrush, dissolve any white water spots with half vinegar and half water, rinse, then buff dry with a microfiber cloth. The drying step is where the shine comes from.

A sink faucet takes about 5 minutes. A full bathroom, with the tub spout, shower head and towel bars, takes 15 to 20.

What do you need?

  • A small bowl of warm water with a few drops of dish soap
  • A spray bottle of half white vinegar, half water
  • A soft toothbrush
  • A non-scratch sponge
  • Two microfiber cloths, one damp and one dry
  • Baking soda, for crusty buildup
  • A plastic sandwich bag and a rubber band, for the shower head

Keep steel wool, green scouring pads, abrasive powders and stiff wire brushes away from chrome. Chrome is a thin plating over another metal. Scratch through it and the damage is permanent.

How do you clean chrome fixtures step by step?

  1. Wash. Wipe the faucet, handles and spout with the soapy cloth. Soap lifts toothpaste, skin oils and soap residue.
  2. Detail the base. Dip the toothbrush in the soapy water and work around the base of the faucet, the joints in the handles and the edge of the drain. Grime builds up in the seams, where the cloth can't reach.
  3. Treat the water spots. Spray the vinegar mix on any white, chalky spots. Let it sit 2 to 3 minutes, then wipe. For thick buildup, soak a paper towel in the mix and wrap it around the spot for 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse. Wipe everything with a cloth dampened in plain water. Vinegar left on metal keeps working.
  5. Buff dry. Polish with the dry microfiber cloth in small circles until there are no drops left.

How do you get hard water spots off chrome?

The white spots are minerals left behind when water dries. Vinegar is a mild acid and dissolves them. For heavy crust around the base of a faucet, make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it on, give it 10 minutes, then work it with the toothbrush and rinse.

If your tap water leaves spots on dishes and glasses, it will leave them on fixtures. In those homes, wipe the faucet dry after the last use of the day and fewer spots get a chance to form.

How do you clean a chrome shower head?

Fill a sandwich bag about a third full with plain white vinegar, slide it over the shower head so the nozzles sit in the liquid, and hold it with a rubber band. Leave it 30 minutes to an hour. Take it off, scrub the nozzles with the toothbrush and run the hot water for a minute to flush them. Don't leave it overnight. Long soaks can dull the finish on some shower heads.

How do you remove rust from chrome?

Small rust spots usually show up where the plating has a tiny chip. Crumple a piece of aluminum foil into a ball, dip it in water and rub the spot gently, keeping both surfaces wet. The foil is softer than chrome, so it lifts the rust without scratching. Rinse and dry.

If the chrome is peeling, flaking or pitted, the plating has worn through. Cleaning won't bring it back. That fixture needs replacing.

Is it really chrome?

Brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black, gold-tone and brass are different finishes with different care. Vinegar and baking soda can strip or discolor them. For any finish that isn't bright, mirror-like chrome, use mild soap and water only, and check the manufacturer's care guide.

How often should chrome be cleaned?

A quick wipe and dry of the sink faucet every few days, and a full clean of all the bathroom fixtures once a week, keeps buildup from getting a hold. For the rest of the room, see how to clean bathroom tiles.

FAQ

What do you clean chrome with? Warm water with a few drops of dish soap handles everyday grime. For white water spots, use half white vinegar and half water, then rinse. Buffing dry with a microfiber cloth is what brings the shine back.

Does vinegar damage chrome? Diluted vinegar is fine on chrome for a few minutes at a time, as long as you rinse it off. Don't leave it soaking for hours, and don't use it on brass, gold-tone, matte black or other specialty finishes without checking the manufacturer's care guide.

How do I remove rust spots from chrome? Dip a crumpled ball of aluminum foil in water and rub the spot gently, keeping both wet. Rinse and dry. If the chrome is flaking or pitted, the plating has worn through and cleaning won't bring it back.

How do I keep chrome fixtures from spotting? Wipe the faucet dry with a cloth after the last use of the day. Water spots are minerals left behind when drops dry, so a dry fixture stays shiny between cleanings.
