How to clean bathroom tiles and grout without damaging them

March 28, 2024•5 min read

To clean bathroom tiles, run the shower hot for a few minutes, spray the tile with a mild cleaner and let it sit for five to ten minutes, scrub the grout lines with a stiff nylon brush and the tile with a non-scratch pad, then rinse and dry. Natural stone gets a pH-neutral cleaner only.

What do you need to clean bathroom tile?

  • A spray bottle of warm water with a teaspoon of dish soap, or a regular bathroom cleaner
  • Baking soda
  • A stiff nylon grout brush (an old toothbrush works for small jobs)
  • A non-scratch scrub pad or sponge
  • Two or three microfiber cloths
  • A squeegee
  • Oxygen bleach powder, for stained grout
  • A pH-neutral stone cleaner, if any of your tile is marble, travertine, slate or limestone

Skip steel wool, green scouring pads on glossy tile, and abrasive powders. They leave fine scratches that hold dirt and make the tile look dull faster.

How do you clean shower tile step by step?

  1. Heat it up. Run the shower hot for three or four minutes with the door closed. Steam softens soap scum so the cleaner does more of the work.
  2. Spray top to bottom. Cover the walls from the top down, then the tub ledge and floor. Dirty water runs down, so you only clean each section once.
  3. Wait. This is the step people skip. Give the cleaner five to ten minutes to break down the film. Scrubbing right away just moves soap scum around.
  4. Scrub the grout first. Work along the grout lines with the brush. Grout is porous and holds grime.
  5. Then the tile faces. Use the non-scratch pad in small circles, paying attention to the corners and the bottom two rows, where scum is heaviest.
  6. Rinse well. Leftover cleaner leaves a film that attracts new dirt.
  7. Squeegee and dry. Squeegee the walls, then wipe the fixtures and the tile edges with a dry microfiber cloth. This is what makes tile look finished instead of streaky.

A standard tub surround takes about 20 to 30 minutes this way, including the wait. Heavily neglected grout can double that.

How do you get grout clean?

Mix baking soda with just enough water to make a paste, work it into the grout lines with the brush, and rinse. For stains that stay, mix oxygen bleach powder with warm water, apply it to the grout, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, scrub and rinse.

Chlorine bleach works on white grout, but use it sparingly, with the fan on and a window open. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners. The fumes are dangerous.

If grout is cracked, crumbling or stained all the way through, cleaning won't fix it. That's a regrouting job. The same goes for black spots behind caulk. When mold is under the caulk, the caulk has to come out.

What about soap scum and hard water spots?

Soap scum is a waxy film. Hard water spots are mineral deposits, the chalky white marks that come back after you dry the tile. They need different things.

  • Soap scum: heat, a soap-based cleaner, dwell time and a non-scratch pad.
  • Hard water spots: a mild acid. On glazed ceramic or porcelain, a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, left for a few minutes and rinsed off, handles a lot of it.

Don't let acid sit on grout often. It wears cement grout down over time.

How do you clean natural stone tile?

Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are soft and react to acid. Vinegar, lemon juice and many bathroom sprays will etch them, leaving dull patches that don't wipe off.

Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner, a soft cloth and plenty of rinsing. Dry it right away. Many stone surfaces also need resealing on a schedule, so check with whoever installed it.

How do you clean a bathroom tile floor?

Vacuum or sweep first to get hair and dust out of the grout lines, because a wet mop turns them into mud. Mop with warm water and a small amount of cleaner, rinse the mop often, and change the water when it turns gray. Get down at the base of the toilet and behind it with a cloth. Grime builds up there.

What makes a difference?

Three things, mostly. They let the product sit instead of scrubbing harder. They work top to bottom so nothing gets cleaned twice. And they dry the surface at the end, which is the difference between clean and looks clean.

The habits worth copying: squeegee the walls after showers, run the exhaust fan during every shower and for a while after, and reseal cement grout about once a year. If a drop of water darkens the grout right away, it's time.

When it makes sense to have it done

Standard House Cleaning, RoutineCare, cleans the tub, shower and tiled walls, the shower door glass and tracks, the fixtures and drains, and the floor on every visit.

If the tile hasn't had a real scrub in a while, Deep Cleaning, PureRenewal, is the one to book. The tub, shower and tiled walls are scrubbed with the soap scum and grout treated, the shower door glass is descaled, and the floor is done at the edges and behind the toilet. Every item on the list is cleaned whether or not it looks like it needs it.

What neither one covers: mold or mildew beyond surface cleaning.

FAQ

What do you clean bathroom tiles with? For glazed ceramic and porcelain, warm water with a little dish soap or a regular bathroom cleaner does the work if you let it sit for five to ten minutes. Natural stone needs a pH-neutral stone cleaner and nothing acidic.

Can I use vinegar on shower tile? On glazed ceramic or porcelain, diluted vinegar is fine for hard water spots, as long as you rinse it off. Don't use it on marble, travertine or limestone, and don't make it a weekly habit on grout.

How do I get grout white again? Scrub it with a baking soda paste and a stiff nylon brush, then use an oxygen bleach soak on stains that stay. If the grout is cracked or stained all the way through, it needs regrouting, not more scrubbing.

How often should shower tile be cleaned? A quick wipe or squeegee after showers and a real scrub every week or two keeps soap scum from building up. Grout benefits from a deeper scrub every few months.

Does a house cleaning include the shower tile? Yes. Standard House Cleaning cleans the tub, shower and tiled walls. Deep Cleaning scrubs them, with the soap scum and grout treated.
