A living room cleaning schedule a busy family can keep

June 28, 2024•4 min read

A living room cleaning schedule that holds up has four layers: a 10-minute reset every night, one full clean a week, a detail pass once a month, and a short list for each change of season. Put each layer on a fixed day, keep the lists short, and the room never gets far enough behind to need a whole Saturday.

Why do cleaning schedules fall apart?

They try to do too much on too many days. A chart that says "Monday dust, Tuesday vacuum, Wednesday glass" works for one week, then soccer practice moves and the whole thing collapses. Fewer, bigger blocks are easier to keep. Pick one weekly day you're usually home, and protect it.

What goes in the nightly reset?

Ten minutes, everyone helps, same time each night. After dinner or before screens works better than right before bed.

  • Blankets folded over the arm of the couch, cushions back in place
  • Toys, shoes, backpacks and sports bags back to their spots
  • Cups, plates and snack wrappers to the kitchen
  • A quick wipe of the coffee table
  • Remotes in one spot

This is the step that makes everything else fast.

What does the weekly living room clean include?

Work in this order, top to bottom, so nothing gets cleaned twice:

  1. Pick up anything the reset missed.
  2. Dust high to low: shelves, the top of the TV, picture frames, lamps, then side tables and the coffee table. A dry microfiber cloth catches dust instead of pushing it onto the floor.
  3. Wipe glass and screens: mirrors, glass tabletops, the TV with a dry microfiber cloth only.
  4. Wipe the touch spots: light switches, door handles, remotes.
  5. Vacuum the upholstery and under the cushions.
  6. Floors last: vacuum rugs and carpet slowly, then mop hard floors.
  7. Empty the trash.

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes for an average room. In a house with kids or a shedding dog, add a second quick vacuum midweek.

What should you clean monthly?

Pick one weekend a month and add 20 minutes to the weekly clean for these:

  • Baseboards and door frames
  • Window sills and the tracks
  • Blinds, with a dry cloth or the vacuum brush
  • Ceiling fan blades and lamp shades
  • Vents and the tops of door frames
  • Under and behind the couch and chairs
  • Throw pillow covers and throw blankets in the wash, if the tags allow it

What belongs on a seasonal list?

Four times a year, at the change of season:

  • Fall: wash the inside of the windows before the heat goes on, vacuum the radiator covers or baseboard heaters, and flip the area rugs.
  • Winter: after the holidays, a full detail pass, since decorations leave dust and needles behind.
  • Spring: move the furniture to clean the floor underneath, and clean the upholstery.
  • Summer: sand and grass come in on everything, so add an extra floor day while the kids are home.

How do you get the family to keep it up?

  • Post the nightly reset where everyone sees it, on the inside of a closet door or the fridge.
  • Give each kid one zone of the room. "Your job is the couch and blankets" is clearer than "help clean up."
  • Use one song as the timer. When it ends, the reset ends.
  • Don't redo their work. A blanket folded badly is still folded.
  • Let the weekly clean move if it has to, but don't skip it twice in a row.

Where does a cleaning service fit in?

Recurring House Cleaning, RoutineCare Plans, can be booked weekly, every other week or every 4 weeks.

On each visit, the floors are vacuumed and mopped, reachable surfaces and furniture are dusted, counters, shelves and tables that are clear of clutter are wiped, mirrors and glass surfaces are cleaned and window sills are wiped.

The pick-up is still yours. Organizing and decluttering aren't on any of our cleaning checklists.

FAQ

How often should you clean the living room? A quick reset every night, a full clean once a week, and a detail pass once a month. Busy rooms in a house with kids or pets may need the floors done twice a week.

How long should a weekly living room clean take? About 30 to 45 minutes for an average room if the nightly reset has been happening. It doubles fast when the room hasn't been picked up first.

What is the right order to clean a living room? Pick up first, then dust from high to low, then glass and screens, then floors last. Dust falls, so anything you vacuum before dusting gets dusty again.
