How to clean chrome kitchen faucets, handles and trim
To clean kitchen chrome, wash it with warm water and a drop of dish soap, then wipe water spots with equal parts white vinegar and water. Rinse with plain water and buff it dry with a microfiber cloth. The drying step is what gives you the shine, and skipping it leaves new spots behind.
Chrome is a thin plating over metal or plastic, so gentle is the rule.
Where is the chrome in your kitchen?
The faucet and its handles, the sprayer, the soap pump, cabinet pulls, appliance handles, trim on the range or hood, the toaster, the kettle and bar stool legs. They all take the same basic method.
What do you need?
- Dish soap
- White vinegar, mixed half and half with water in a spray bottle
- Baking soda
- Two or three microfiber cloths
- An old soft toothbrush
- Aluminum foil, for rust spots only
Skip steel wool, scouring powder and the rough side of a sponge. They scratch the plating, and once it's worn through, the metal underneath can rust.
How do you clean a chrome kitchen faucet?
- Wash it. Wipe the faucet with a cloth dipped in warm water and a drop of dish soap. This takes off the grease and fingerprints that make kitchen chrome look dull.
- Get the base and seams. Use the soft toothbrush where the faucet meets the sink or counter, around the handle and under the spout. Gunk builds up there first.
- Spray the water spots. Mist the vinegar mix on any white spots and leave it a minute or two.
- Wrap the stubborn ones. For heavy mineral buildup, soak a paper towel in the vinegar mix, wrap it around the spot and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Rinse. Wipe with a cloth and plain water so no vinegar stays on the finish.
- Buff dry. Use a dry microfiber cloth in small circles until it shines.
The whole job takes about 5 to 10 minutes, or 20 if you're wrapping buildup.
What about the aerator?
If the stream from your faucet sprays sideways or runs weak, the aerator at the tip of the spout is probably clogged with mineral grit. Many unscrew by hand. Soak it in plain vinegar in a small cup for 30 minutes, brush it with the toothbrush, rinse and screw it back on. If yours needs a tool, check the instructions that came with the faucet.
How do you get grease off chrome handles and trim?
Grease near the stove builds a sticky film that vinegar alone won't cut. Wipe it with warm water and dish soap first. For a thick, tacky layer, sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and rub gently, then rinse and dry. Baking soda is a mild scrub, so keep the pressure light.
How do you get rust or spots off old chrome?
Rust spots: scrunch a piece of aluminum foil into a ball, dip it in water or the vinegar mix, and rub the spot gently. The foil is softer than chrome, so it lifts rust without scratching the plating. Rinse and dry.
Pitting: small pits are places where the plating has worn through. Cleaning won't fill them, but a soft baking soda paste lifts the grime that sits inside them. Rinse and dry well, because pits hold water and that's where rust starts.
If the chrome is flaking or peeling, cleaning won't bring it back. That piece is due for replacement.
What should you avoid on chrome?
- Abrasive pads, powders and steel wool
- Bleach and strong acids, which can pit the plating
- Leaving vinegar to sit for hours
- Vinegar on marble, granite or other natural stone around the faucet, since acid can etch stone
Some faucets look like chrome but have a different finish, like brushed nickel or a coated color. If you're not sure, check the faucet maker's care instructions before using vinegar.
How do you keep chrome shiny?
Dry the faucet with a towel after the evening dishes. It takes ten seconds and stops water spots before they form. Wipe appliance and cabinet handles once a week with a damp, soapy cloth, since hands carry grease.

FAQ
How do you clean a chrome kitchen faucet? Wash it with warm water and a drop of dish soap, then wipe any water spots with equal parts white vinegar and water. Rinse with plain water and buff it dry with a microfiber cloth so new spots don't form.
Does vinegar damage chrome? Diluted vinegar is fine on chrome for a few minutes, as long as you rinse it off and dry the surface. Don't leave it soaking for hours, and keep it off natural stone counters around the faucet.
How do you get rust off chrome? Dip a piece of aluminum foil in water, scrunch it into a ball, and rub the rust spot gently. Rinse and dry, then keep the area dry, because rust on chrome usually means the plating is worn there.
Can you fix pitted chrome? Cleaning won't fill pits in the plating, but it removes the grime and rust that collects in them so the surface looks better. Keep pitted chrome dry, and replace the piece if the plating is flaking.
