How to clean a bathroom floor, including behind the toilet

March 27, 2024•4 min read

To clean a bathroom floor, take the rugs and the trash can out, get the hair and dust up dry, wipe around and behind the toilet by hand, then mop from the far corner toward the door with warm water and a little cleaner. Dry it with a towel or a dry mop pad so it doesn't streak.

What do you need?

  • A vacuum with a hose, or a dry dust mop
  • Damp paper towels for hair in the corners
  • A bucket of warm water with a small amount of floor cleaner or dish soap
  • A flat microfiber mop with two pads, one damp and one dry
  • A cloth and gloves for the toilet base
  • A stiff brush for grout lines

Leave the string mop in the garage. It holds dirty water and pushes it into the grout.

How do you clean a bathroom floor step by step?

  1. Clear it. Take out the bath mat, the trash can, the scale and the step stool. A bathroom floor is small, and five minutes of clearing makes the rest go fast.
  2. Get the dry stuff up. Vacuum or dust mop, with the hose along the tub and the vanity toe kick. Hair turns into gray paste the moment it gets wet.
  3. Do the toilet area by hand. Spray the base of the toilet, the floor around it and the wall behind it with cleaner. Wipe it with a cloth you'll wash afterward. Get down low for the back of the base and the bolt caps.
  4. Mop from the back to the door. Damp, not wet. Start in the far corner and work toward the door so you don't walk over what you've done. Rinse the pad when it looks gray.
  5. Scrub the grout where it's dark. A stiff brush along the lines in front of the toilet and the tub, then mop again over those spots.
  6. Dry it. Go over the floor with a dry pad or an old towel underfoot. This keeps water out of the grout and stops streaks on vinyl and glossy tile.
  7. Put the mat back when the floor is dry. A damp mat on a damp floor leads to mildew underneath.

A full bathroom floor takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

How should you clean different bathroom floor types?

Ceramic and porcelain tile: Warm water and a mild cleaner. Diluted vinegar is fine now and then on glazed tile, but not weekly, because it wears cement grout over time.

Vinyl and luxury vinyl plank: Warm water with a few drops of dish soap and a well-wrung mop. Skip steam mops, wax and oil soaps, which leave a film or loosen the seams.

Natural stone (marble, travertine, slate): A pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Vinegar and lemon etch the surface. Dry it right away.

Laminate: Rare in bathrooms for good reason. Barely damp only, and wipe up standing water fast.

What mistakes ruin bathroom floors?

  • Too much water. It sits in the grout and gets under vinyl edges.
  • Too much soap. Residue makes the floor sticky and catches the next round of dirt.
  • Mopping before picking up hair. You end up chasing clumps around the room.
  • One mop for every room. Keep a separate pad or mop head for the bathroom.
  • Mixing cleaners. Bleach with ammonia or vinegar makes toxic fumes. One product at a time.

Why does the floor still smell after mopping?

Urine splashes into the grout lines and the caulk around the bottom of the toilet, and a mop glides over it. Scrub the base and the floor in a two-foot circle with cleaner and a brush, then rinse.

If the smell comes back within a day or two, look at the caulk. Cracked or dark caulk holds moisture. And if the toilet rocks at all, the wax seal underneath may be failing, which is a plumbing job.

Does a house cleaning include the bathroom floor?

Yes. Standard House Cleaning, RoutineCare, cleans the toilet inside, outside and at the base, and the bathroom floor, on every visit.

On Deep Cleaning, PureRenewal, the floor is done at the edges and behind the toilet. The tub, shower and tiled walls are scrubbed, with the soap scum and grout treated. Every item on the list is cleaned whether or not it looks like it needs it.

FAQ

What's the right way to clean a bathroom floor? Get hair and dust up dry first, with a vacuum or a damp paper towel. Wipe around and behind the toilet by hand, then mop from the far corner toward the door with a small amount of cleaner and dry it.

Why does the floor around my toilet smell even after I mop? Urine splashes into the grout and the caulk line at the base, and a mop rarely reaches it. Scrub the base and the floor around it with a cloth and cleaner. If the smell stays, the caulk or the wax seal under the toilet may need replacing.

Can I use a steam mop on a bathroom floor? On sealed ceramic and porcelain tile, yes. Avoid it on vinyl plank, laminate and natural stone, where the heat and moisture can loosen seams or damage the sealer.

How often should a bathroom floor be cleaned? Once a week, with a quick pass for hair in between in a busy family bathroom. The area around the toilet benefits from a wipe every few days in homes with young boys.
